SIEM vs SOAR

SIEM vs SOAR: Which One Does Your Organization Need?

Published:
December 12, 2025

Key Takeaways:

  • SIEM and SOAR have different roles: SIEM detects and logs, while SOAR automates and orchestrates responses.

  • Start with SIEM to gain visibility, then adopt SOAR as alert volumes increase and you need faster, automated responses.

  • Huntress Managed SIEM offers human-verified alerts and optional SOAR hooks, giving you flexibility to grow without overloading your team.

The cyber threats presented today, and those predicted for tomorrow, would barely be recognizable to a security team five years ago. There’s constant pressure to be at the cutting edge of cybersecurity, and understanding how SIEM vs SOAR solutions compete (and cooperate) is key to keeping your company and customers safe.

What’s SIEM and SOAR?

SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) solutions collect and analyze logs of all the data moving through your digital environment. These can be used in analyses to detect threats and, in some cases, carry out protective actions automatically. SIEM also supports regulatory compliance by maintaining detailed records.

SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response) solutions take a different approach than SIEM. Where SIEM collects and analyzes data to detect threats, SOAR leans heavily into AI and automation to highlight critical threats for the benefit of a human SecOps team. This helps security teams respond faster and with greater consistency.

For many organizations, though, building and maintaining both tools isn’t realistic. That’s why Huntress Managed SIEM offers more than traditional SIEMs, with human-verified alerts and threat response capabilities so you can scale towards SOAR-like outcomes when you’re ready.

What’s the difference between SIEM and SOAR?

On the surface, the two look very similar. A SIEM with AI and machine learning add-ons can do much of what a SOAR can do. A good SOAR with a few extra features can function almost like a SIEM solution. But they’re not the same.

  • Focus: SIEM specializes in threat detection, while SOAR is all about automated response and orchestration.

  • Data sources: SIEM relies primarily on data logs, while SOAR platforms ingest data from SIEMs and other tools.

  • Efficiency: SIEM makes your data—and the way it is being used—much more visible. SOAR makes your security operations more efficient by automating workflows.

  • Operation: SIEM relies mostly on log data, deep configuration, and tuning. SOAR takes its data from many security devices, including SIEM, if you have both.

Think of SIEM as your eyes and ears, and SOAR as your arms and hands.

Do I need both SIEM and SOAR?

Maybe. SIEM helps detect data anomalies that might be threats. SOAR helps sort out the false positives and non-threat anomalies from the actual problems and attacks very quickly.

Like any business need, it comes down to what capacity you need, and what you can afford to pay for it.

Not fun fact:  VPN rule violations and business email compromise (BEC) tactics like inbox rule modification also stand out as some of the most prevalent identity-based threats. —Huntress Managed ITDR Report, 2025

How do SIEM and SOAR work together?

SIEM and SOAR often work together and are described as complementary tools. One focuses on visibility, while the other focuses on action.

A SIEM solution collects and correlates logs from across your environment to identify suspicious activity, like unusual login attempts, privilege escalations, or signs of malware.

A SOAR then takes those alerts and orchestrates a predefined response, reducing the need for manual intervention. For example, if a SIEM flags repeated failed login attempts from a foreign IP, a SOAR playbook could:

  • Automatically block that IP at the firewall

  • Force a password reset for the targeted account

  • Open a ticket for the security team with all relevant context

All of this turns raw data into action:

  • SIEM = detection and context (the “eyes”)

  • SOAR = response and automation (the “hands”)

Together, the two cut down on alert fatigue by filtering noise and auto-closing false positives. They also enforce consistent responses to recurring threats and free analysts to focus on higher-value investigations instead of repetitive tasks.

The result? Faster incident handling, stronger defenses, and a leaner security operation.

When to use SIEM vs SOAR?

Most use cases call for SIEM solutions when you need comprehensive monitoring and logging of an extensive digital presence. SIEM lets you unify your security posture and spot vulnerabilities in your architecture.

Most use cases see SOAR as necessary when you already have an effective logging and detection solution—not necessarily an SIEM solution—but you need to be able to sort and prioritize threat detections very quickly. Companies often adopt SOAR when their teams are overwhelmed by alerts and need automated workflows to respond faster and smarter.

SIEM first, then scale with SOAR

Modern security programs typically start with SIEM for visibility and compliance, then add SOAR when alert fatigue or incident response bottlenecks demand it.

Maturity curve: Start with SIEM for visibility, add SOAR when alert volume demands automation

It may be that newer or smaller businesses and other organizations will need little more than a SIEM solution for an extended period of time. But eventually, growth and added complexity will increase the workload on your security team so much that a SOAR would be a profitable option.

Integration pitfalls: API limits, playbook maintenance, and false‑positive loops

There are a number of potential issues when attempting to integrate SOAR and SIEM technology. Integration isn’t always plug-and-play. The simplest solution might be to seek out a SIEM solution that’s easy to integrate and upgrade before you ever really start looking at SOAR technology. You’ll need to look out for API limitations, playbook upkeep, and feedback loops caused by false positives.

ROI metrics: Analyst hours saved, MTTR, and compliance adherence

This is a simple cost-benefit analysis. Measure your return on investment by tracking analyst hours saved, mean-time-to-respond (MTTR), and regulatory compliance improvements. The performance gains in these three categories often justify the added SOAR investment, especially in larger or highly regulated environments. Just remember, not all costs are in dollars at first. Customer confidence may be intangible, but when you lose it, your bottom line will feel it.

Is SIEM outdated?

No, though some of the older, data-logging-only approaches to SIEM are becoming less useful. Newer versions of SIEM—like our own—leverage the power of AI to deliver incident analysis in minutes rather than days, maintain constant overwatch and monitoring, and do it all with improved accuracy and fewer false positive results.
